A visit by Dr. J. V. Narlikar

"Pinch me, I'm dreaming", this was the reaction we had when we were told that the world renowned astrophysicist Dr.Jayant V Narlikar was to visit our academy. We were then convinced further that we were dreaming when we heard that even his wife, a famous mathematician, Dr.Mangala Narlikar was also coming.

On the morning of June 5, none of us had our breakfast properly due to our impatience, we just couldn't wait. We had our first three periods, but none of us paid any attention there either. Finally the moment had arrived, we were all seated in the assembly hall when Dr. Narlikar walked in along with his wife Dr.Mangala Narlikar. We all stood; half excited and half astonished.

We had two sessions, one with Dr. Narlikar and then one with Madam Narlikar. During the first session Dr. Narlikar made a presentation on cosmic illusions. I had never heard of this before but now I came to know all about it. As his presentation continued I was surprised to see how simple and modest Dr. Narlikar was. He explained really well that too coming down to our level of understanding. He also answered the questions we had for him.

If you think that this was great, wait it gets even better, in the second session Madam Narlikar explained to us about Mathematical Induction. She explains really well and believe me even I was understanding Maths at that point of time. She also gave us some interesting puzzles to solve. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

After such an exciting day we never expected the next day to also be so awesome. We being the grade X students got a chance to actually interact with the great astrophysicist, personally. It was a science extravaganza, Dr Narlikar seemed to know each and every minute detail of science. We ran out of questions but he never ran out of answers. Dr Mangala Narlikar was also great, she wouldn't give up until she drove the Maths-phobia out of us.

After this interactive session, we gathered in the assembly hall to give Dr.J.V. Narlikar and Dr.Mangala Narlikar a vote of thanks. They left campus, but none of us could yet believe that we had met such world renowned people and that they could spare two entire days out of their busy schedule for us.

These two days I will remember for my entire life and boast about to my friends and relatives, for it isn't every day you meet such great people like Dr.J.V.Narlikar and Dr. Mangala Narlikar
